I'm relatively new to doing production and recording people. How do guys come up with clean sounding recordings? We're recording all vocals at the radio station I spin at so we're using relatively decent quality mics. After than I drop the vocals into cool edit, normalize volumes if we have 2 different people on a track, and start playing with the equalizer and such.

One of the guys I'm working with insists on doubling everything by re-recording him doing the track a second time making him sound like he's backing himself up. He says its the industry standard and all artists do it but I've never heard of doing it before. Usually it just ends up sounding like shit.

The first thing I usually do to clean up the voice is run the "gate that compressor" option under dynamics processing. From there I usually play with the lower frequencies on the voice in the equalizer. This seems to have the best sound. I've also used the "shower" delay effect and drop the delay from 28ms to 20ms.

Here's a few samples of stuff we've recorded.

Thanks for any help..

i don't know relatively anything about production but i hear doubling in almost 80% of the beats i listen to... it adds emphasis to the song's lyrics especially since the artists are doubling the words that rhyme...
