when i have the time, i do, but since i dont start the porject at home or work on it at home, you never hear it because it stays there...you should hear what me and dave are working on for a well known manager of some well known groups outta NY...some pure heat, totally original, i play the break on the set, sounds tiiiight. But samplings still where its at, i like both, but i sample more because thats all i can do at home.

hafree you are a cunt

Nothing special, just a pair of Technics 1200s in some industrial looking Odyssey flight cases, Ortofon DJ-S carts, Vestax PMC05Pro2 mixer, hooked into an Onkyo amp with Infiniti monitors and a fat JBL sub. Shure SM-58 mic and a Pioneer CDJ-100S CD deck on the side. Lots of fun audio production software on the PC.

I agree that sampling can be the key to variety in hiphop music production, rather than everything sounding the same, made with the same instruments. However from a label's point of view, it's a completely different story. People like Puff Daddy and Jay-Z can sample pretty much anything they want since they have their own labels which are subsidiaries of the big 5 labels that make up the RIAA. When the copyright holder is your parent label, licensing those samples becomes a trivial issue. But when you're part of an independent label you don't have that luxury. If you sample 2 basslines, 3 beats, a flute loop and 2 sets of strings to make a particular track, now you owe royalties to 8 individuals. In order to do things 100% legit, you'd need to sell each CD for $75 to cover your licensing costs.

Instead, find the flute loop you want to sample and pay some high school kid in the band $20 to record a few takes of that same loop. Get access to a piano, guitar, bass, etc and record some of your own samples before sequencing them. It won't always produce the same sound of course, but it certainly makes things easier when it comes time to handle the legalities of releasing an album.

hafree, god damn it how many times have we had this convo! I totally agree, but thats if you pay for all your samples, and i would only be inclined to to that for a major pressing. If you are on an independant label and you sell even 50,000 copies, you arent going to get nailed. I know so many underground artists that dont licence their samples and they sell well in the 10000's of copies. But yes, as i said before i do make original shit too but i never bring it home, the only shit you hear is the shit that i start on at home, so far anyways.

as i also told you before through his dad and himself, dave knows many many good musicians, so yeah im gonna start doing that, we have in the past for local artists, guitar players, bass players, piano players, but i wanna personally start doing it more as well.
